HURRICANE HELENE

Hurricane Helene impacted at least nine counties across East Tennessee. Intense flooding and rainfall led to the deaths of six workers from Impact Plastics in Unicoi County. Maria Guzman was one of the first reporters on the scene as family members searched for their loved ones. She reported from evacuations to FEMA aid and rebuilding efforts. Her coverage spanned from live on-the-ground reporting to continued follow-up one year later. Through community trust and strong relationships, she became the first reporter in Tennessee to break the story of crews finding the last body of an Impact Plastics employee.
